Types of Car Keys

Car keys have come a long way from their simple beginnings. Modern vehicles now use a variety of key types, each with its own features and security benefits. Let’s dive into the different types of car keys you might encounter.

Traditional Keys

Traditional keys are the simplest type of car key. You’ll typically find these on older vehicle models. They are straightforward and don’t require any specialized encoding. Traditional keys are usually made from steel, brass, or a combination of nickel and brass.

  • Inexpensive: Because they don’t have any electronic components, traditional keys are inexpensive to make and duplicate.
  • Quick Duplication: These keys can be cut quickly, often in just a few minutes.

Laser-Cut Keys

Laser-cut keys, also known as sidewinder keys, are more sophisticated than traditional keys. They have thicker shanks and fewer carved-out grooves.

  • Transponder Chips: Many laser-cut keys come with built-in transponder chips that need to be programmed specifically for your vehicle.
  • Specific Programming: The programming process involves syncing the key’s chip with your car’s onboard computer, adding an extra layer of security.

Transponder Keys

Transponder keys, also known as chip keys, contain an embedded chip in the plastic head. This chip has a unique code that matches the code in your vehicle’s computer system.

  • Signal-Emitting Circuits: When you insert a transponder key into the ignition, the car reads the code and starts the engine.
  • Security Features: This technology significantly reduces the risk of theft, as only the correctly coded key can start the car.

Smart Keys

Smart keys offer advanced technology for modern vehicles. These keys provide keyless entry and push-button start features.

  • Keyless Entry: You can open up your car without inserting the key. Just having the smart key in your pocket is enough.
  • Push-Button Start: Start your car with the push of a button, as long as the smart key is within range.
  • Advanced Technology: These keys often include additional features like remote start and vehicle tracking.

Key Fobs

Key fobs are integral to many modern car key sets. They usually come with an internal transmitter that allows for remote functions.

  • Remote Functions: Key fobs can lock and open up your car, open the trunk, and sometimes even start the engine remotely.
  • Keyless Systems: Many modern vehicles use key fobs as part of their keyless entry systems, making them a convenient and secure option.

How Car Keys Are Made

Traditional Key Cutting

Traditional car keys are straightforward to make. They are typically found in older vehicles and are made of steel, brass, or a mixture of nickel and brass.

The Cutting Process:

  1. Position the Original and Blank Keys: The original key is placed on one side of a key duplicator machine, while a blank key is positioned on the other side.
  2. Alignment: A key guide ensures both keys are perfectly aligned.
  3. Cutting the Key: The machine uses the original key as a template. As both keys move simultaneously, the cutting tool shaves the blank key to match the original.

This process is quick, taking just a few minutes, and results in an accurate duplicate.

Laser-Cut Key Programming

Laser-cut keys, also known as sidewinder keys, are more complex. They have thicker shanks and fewer grooves compared to traditional keys. These keys often have built-in transponder chips that need programming to work with your vehicle.

The Programming Process:

  1. Specialized Equipment: A laser key cutting machine is used. This machine is more precise and can handle the thicker, more complex design of laser-cut keys.
  2. Transponder Chip: The key contains a transponder chip that must be programmed for your specific vehicle.
  3. Vehicle-Specific Programming: The new key is synced with your car’s computer system. This ensures the key works correctly with your vehicle’s ignition and security system.

Due to the specialized equipment and programming involved, this process can take longer than traditional key cutting.

Smart Key Programming

Smart keys are the most advanced type of car keys. They use unique transponder chips and are part of keyless entry systems. These keys can lock/open up doors, open the trunk, and even start the car without inserting the key into the ignition.

The Programming Process:

  1. Unique Transponder Chips: Each smart key contains a unique transponder chip that communicates with your car’s system.
  2. Specific Combinations: Programming involves entering specific combinations and vehicle details into a specialized device.
  3. Vehicle Response: The key is then tested to ensure it responds correctly to your vehicle.

This process can take up to an hour, depending on the complexity of the smart key and the specific requirements of your car.

By understanding these processes, you can better appreciate the craftsmanship and technology that goes into making your car keys. Whether it’s a simple traditional key or a sophisticated smart key, Lowcountry Ace has the expertise to provide you with a perfect replacement.

Car Key Replacement Costs

Cost of Traditional Keys

Traditional car keys are the simplest and most affordable type. They are often made from steel or brass and don’t require any special programming. At Lowcountry Ace, duplicating a traditional key typically costs between a few dollars and $20.

The process is quick—usually taking just a few minutes—making it a convenient option for older vehicles.

Cost of Smart Keys

Smart keys, on the other hand, are more advanced and come with a higher price tag. These keys often feature transponder chips and keyless entry systems. The cost for replacing a smart key can range from $40 to $100 at Lowcountry Ace, which is still more affordable than dealerships.

Dealerships often charge inflated prices for smart key replacements due to the specialized programming required. At Lowcountry Ace, the cost of programming is included in the price, offering a transparent and cost-effective solution.

Opting for a locksmith can save you both time and money. Lowcountry Ace offers mobile locksmith services that come to your location, making it incredibly convenient. Most visits take 15 minutes or less, and the flat rate pricing ensures there are no hidden fees.

Digital Car Keys

Digital car keys are changing how we think about car security and convenience. Let’s dive into how these keys work and why they’re becoming more popular.

Apple Wallet Integration

Apple has made it easy to use your iPhone as a car key. With the iPhone car key feature in the Apple Wallet, you can lock, open up, and even start your car—all with your phone. This feature is available for many compatible vehicles, and Apple regularly provides updates to improve security and functionality.

Android Digital Car Key

Android users aren’t left out either. The Android digital car key works similarly, allowing you to control your car using your Android device. You can lock/open up your car, start the engine, and integrate these functions with other mobile apps for a seamless experience.

Security Improvements

Security is a big concern with digital car keys. That’s why an Apple-led consortium is working to make digital keys safer. This group is setting new standards to prevent keyless car theft, which has been on the rise. By using advanced technologies like ultra-wideband (UWB), digital car keys are becoming much harder to hack.

The bottom line is, digital car keys offer both convenience and improved security. They are a modern solution to an age-old problem, making your life easier while keeping your vehicle safe.

Manager wouldn’t return money to my credit card despite having the same card and rewards number (no receipt), so gift card only. I was told “I’d have to look it up in the computer, it’s tedious”After talking to other customers, I learned it’s routine to return with same credit card or rewards account.
