Folly Beach Pier and Bait Shop

History of Folly Beach Pier

The Folly Beach Pier has a rich history that adds to its charm and allure. Originally, it was a busy hub for entertainment, featuring a green and white pavilion made from palmetto tree logs. This pavilion was not just any structure; it housed a large dance floor, comparable in size to a basketball court. The pier was a cultural hotspot, attracting big musical acts like Jerry Lee Lewis, The Drifters, and The Coasters.

However, the original structure faced its share of challenges. It suffered two devastating fires, leading to its eventual demolition. But the spirit of the pier lived on! In 1995, Charleston County Parks acquired the beachfront property, leading to the creation of the Edwin S. Taylor Folly Beach Fishing Pier. Unfortunately, the wooden pier didn’t last as long as expected due to marine borers.

In 2020, construction on a new pier began, culminating in its grand opening in December 2022. This modern pier features prestressed concrete piles and a concrete substructure, ensuring a longer lifespan and paying homage to its historic predecessor.

Live Bait: Live bait like shrimp, minnows, and crabs are excellent choices for targeting popular species such as Redfish and Flounder. These baits mimic the natural prey of these fish, making them irresistible.

Frozen Bait: If convenience is your priority, frozen bait like squid or mullet is a reliable option. It’s perfect for longer trips and can attract a variety of fish species. Plus, it’s easy to store and transport.

Artificial Lures: For those who prefer the versatility of lures, artificial options can be very effective, especially when targeting species like Spotted Seatrout and Bluefish. Look for lures that mimic local baitfish in color and movement.

Fishing Techniques for Success

Fishing at Folly Beach offers different environments, each requiring specific techniques.

Inshore Fishing: This technique is ideal for targeting species like Redfish and Black Drum. Use light tackle and live bait for the best results. Focus on areas like marshes and inlets where these fish are commonly found.

Pier Fishing: The Folly Beach Pier is a prime spot for catching a variety of fish, including Tarpon and Spanish Mackerel. Use heavier tackle to withstand the pull of larger fish. The pier’s tackle shop is a great place to get the gear you need and pick up some local tips.

Surf Fishing: If you enjoy the challenge of casting from the shore, surf fishing is for you. Long rods and strong lines are essential, as you’ll need to cast beyond the breaking waves. Early morning and late evening are the best times to catch fish like Bluefish and Flounder.

Local Knowledge and Seasonal Tips

Understanding the seasonal patterns of fish can significantly boost your catch rate.

  • Fall: This is the best time for Bull Redfish. The cooler waters make them more active.
  • Winter: Clear waters provide excellent sight fishing opportunities for Redfish and Trout.
  • Spring: Mahi Mahi and Wahoo are more accessible as they migrate closer to shore.
  • Summer: Tarpon and Yellowfin Tuna are abundant, making it an exciting time for offshore fishing.

The helpful team at Lowcountry Ace is always ready to share their local knowledge and offer bait recommendations custom to the season and your target species.

With these tips and tricks, you’re well on your way to a successful fishing trip at Folly Beach. Whether you’re casting from the shore or the pier, using the right bait and techniques will help you reel in the big one!

Manager wouldn’t return money to my credit card despite having the same card and rewards number (no receipt), so gift card only. I was told “I’d have to look it up in the computer, it’s tedious”After talking to other customers, I learned it’s routine to return with same credit card or rewards account.
