Pro Tip: Check out local shops and online stores during spring sales. They often clear out last year’s models to make room for new stock.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is another prime time for fishing gear sales. Many retailers use this holiday to offer significant discounts on outdoor equipment, including fishing gear. It’s an excellent opportunity to gear up for the summer season.

Black Friday

Black Friday is famous for its massive discounts, and fishing gear is no exception. This shopping event, which occurs the day after Thanksgiving, is an excellent time to find deep discounts on high-quality fishing equipment.

End-of-Year Clearance

As the year comes to a close, many stores offer clearance sales to get rid of remaining stock. This is an ideal time to find fishing gear at rock-bottom prices. Retailers want to make room for new inventory, so they slash prices on older models and remaining stock.

When Does Fishing Gear Go on Sale?

Fishing gear sales happen throughout the year, but there are specific times when you’re more likely to find the best deals. Knowing when fishing gear goes on sale can help you get the most bang for your buck.

Spring Sales

Spring is a prime time for fishing gear sales. As the weather warms up, many anglers start preparing for the fishing season. Retailers know this and often offer discounts to attract customers.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, and it’s also a great time to find sales on fishing gear. Many stores offer significant discounts during this holiday weekend.

Black Friday

Black Friday is another excellent opportunity to score deals on fishing gear. Many retailers slash prices on a wide range of products the day after Thanksgiving.

End-of-Year Clearance

As the year comes to a close, many stores need to clear out old inventory to make room for new products. This is when you can find some of the best deals on fishing gear.

Tips for Finding the Best Deals

Comparison Shopping

Comparison shopping is a powerful tool. If you see a product you like but it’s too pricey, ask the store manager if they can lower the price. If they won’t, go to another store and tell them about the first store’s price. Often, this can get you a 10-15% discount, especially on items valued over $50.

Online Retailers

Shopping online can uncover some of the best deals. Check the prices online before heading to a physical store. Knowing the online price can help you negotiate better deals in-store.

Patience

Patience can pay off big time. If you’re eyeing a new reel but don’t need it right away, wait. Manufacturers often have excess inventory after the first of the year, leading to better deals.

Bartering

Bartering is another great way to save. After big fishing tackle shows, many anglers buy new gear and then decide they don’t need it. Check message boards for awesome bargains.

Example: It’s not uncommon to see $300 rods offered for $225 with free shipping. Trades are also common, like swapping a reel for several swimbaits. This method can get you what you need without spending extra money.

How to Save Money on Fishing Gear

When you’re passionate about fishing, every penny counts. Here are some practical tips to help you save money on your gear:

Use Backing on Reels

Using backing on your reels can save you a lot of money on fishing line. Instead of spooling your entire reel with expensive line, you can use cheaper line as backing and only fill the top portion with the high-quality line. This way, you get the performance you need without breaking the bank.

Look for Red Tags

When shopping at your local tackle shop, keep an eye out for red tags. These usually indicate items on sale. You might not always find the exact size or color you want, but the significant discounts can make it worth the compromise. It’s not uncommon to find soft baits and hard baits for as little as 99 cents.

Comparison Shop

Don’t settle for the first price you see. Visit multiple stores and ask if they can offer a better deal. For example, if a manager at one store won’t budge on a price, mention it to a manager at another store. Often, this can lead to a 10-15% discount, especially on items valued at $50 or more.

Go Online

Check online for great deals on both new and overstock items. Knowing online prices can give you leverage when negotiating in-store.

Be Patient

If you don’t need new gear immediately, wait for better deals. Manufacturers often have excess inventory, leading to significant discounts after the first of the year. Patience can pay off with lower prices on high-quality items.

Barter

After large fishing tackle shows like ICAST, many anglers decide they don’t need the latest gear they bought. Frequenting message boards can lead to excellent bartering opportunities. You might find $300 rods for $225 or trade a reel for several swimbaits. This can be a great way to get what you need without spending extra money.

Frequently Asked Questions about Fishing Gear Sales

How can I save money on fishing gear?

Saving money on fishing gear can be easier than you think. Here are a few strategies to help you stretch your budget:

Use Backing on Reels: Instead of filling your entire reel with expensive fishing line, use a cheaper line as backing and then top it off with the premium line. This way, you save money and still get the performance you need.

Look for Red Tags: When shopping at your local tackle shop, keep an eye out for red tags. These often indicate clearance items or special deals. For example, you might find soft and hard baits for as little as 99 cents.

Comparison Shop: Don’t settle for the first price you see. Visit multiple stores and ask managers if they can offer a better deal. Mentioning lower prices from other stores can sometimes get you a discount of 10-15%.

Go Online: Websites often have great deals, especially on manufacturers’ overruns or slow-moving merchandise. Plus, you can use these online prices to negotiate better deals in-store.

Be Patient: If you don’t need a new reel right away, wait for end-of-year sales. Manufacturers often discount excess inventory, giving you a chance to snag high-quality gear at lower prices.

Barter: Check out message boards. Many anglers trade gear they no longer need, and you can find excellent deals like $300 rods for $225 or trade a reel for several swimbaits.

What is the markup on fishing gear?

The markup on fishing gear varies, but it can be quite significant. Retailers often mark up fishing gear by 30% to 50%. This markup covers the cost of running the store, paying staff, and other operational expenses. Knowing this can help you understand why prices are set the way they are and can also give you leverage when negotiating for a better deal.

Why is there a shortage of fishing tackle?

The shortage of fishing tackle can be attributed to several factors:

Lockdowns: During the COVID-19 pandemic, many manufacturing plants shut down or operated at reduced capacity, leading to a backlog in production.

Travel Restrictions: These restrictions disrupted the supply chain, making it harder to import materials and ship finished products.

Labor Shortages: Many factories faced labor shortages, which slowed down production and increased lead times for new gear.

Production Issues: With increased demand for outdoor activities, manufacturers struggled to keep up, leading to stock shortages and longer wait times for restocking.

Understanding these factors can help you plan your purchases better and avoid frustration when certain items are out of stock.

Conclusion

Timing your purchases right can save you a lot of money on fishing gear. Seasonal sales like spring sales, Memorial Day, Black Friday, and end-of-year clearance are great opportunities to find discounts. Knowing when fishing gear goes on sale helps you plan and make the most of your budget.

Manager wouldn’t return money to my credit card despite having the same card and rewards number (no receipt), so gift card only. I was told “I’d have to look it up in the computer, it’s tedious”After talking to other customers, I learned it’s routine to return with same credit card or rewards account.
